Introduced
Summary
Creates mandatory minimum prison terms of at least 25 years, up to life, for attempts to kill certain senior federal officials. This bill would amend 18 U.S.C. §351(c) and 18 U.S.C. §1751(c) to focus those statutes on attempts to kill individuals listed in each subsection, including the President, Vice President, and specified presidential staff, by changing the operative clause to begin "(1) Whoever attempts" and removing the phrase "kill or", then adding a sentence that requires a minimum term of 25 years or life for such attempts. It does not change other penalties for completed assassinations or related offenses beyond codifying this mandatory minimum for attempts.

Long prison terms for attacks on officials
If enacted, the bill would add mandatory minimum prison terms for attempts to kill certain protected federal officials. Anyone who attempts to kill a person covered by the statutes listed (such as the President, Vice President, members of Congress, Cabinet members, Supreme Court Justices, or certain presidential staff) would face at least 25 years in prison, or life. The bill would do this by changing 18 U.S.C. §351 and 18 U.S.C. §1751 to make the attempted killing offense start with “Whoever attempts” and add the new minimum. The change would take effect upon enactment.
