Immigrants can name a release contact

If enacted, DHS would offer anyone taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement the option at intake to name a point of contact and give that person’s contact information. Before release, DHS would notify the designated contact, unless the person was held at a port of entry for less than 12 hours. DHS would try at least two times to notify the contact. DHS would provide translation and interpretation when a detainee chooses a contact and when DHS notifies the contact in the contact’s chosen language. Information collected under this rule would not be used for enforcement. These rules would take effect upon enactment.
