Sponsored By: Representative Roy, Chip [R-TX-21]
Introduced
Summary
Targets the Southern Poverty Law Center by removing its federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. This bill would direct that, notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Southern Poverty Law Center shall not be treated as described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. The change would apply to taxable years ending after enactment. Section 1 gives the short title Stop Subsidizing Political Lawfare by Charities Act of 2026, also called the Stop the SPLC Act of 2026.

Donors lose tax break for SPLC
If enacted, this bill would say the Southern Poverty Law Center is not a 501(c)(3) charity. That would apply to taxable years ending after the date of enactment. You would not be able to claim federal charitable deductions for gifts to the SPLC for those years. The SPLC could have to pay federal income tax and file extra tax reports.
