It notes charter schools operate in 45 states plus the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico, serve about 3.7 million students in roughly 8,000 schools, grew from about 660,000 students in 2002 to 3.7 million in 2021, and are authorized and held accountable under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act for student achievement and sound management.
