Free cancer screening and prevention services for Department of Defense firefighters. This bill would require the Secretary of Defense to provide, at no cost to firefighters, testing and related services during annual periodic health assessments to detect and prevent breast, colon, prostate, and other cancers identified as higher risk among firefighters.

  • Firefighters: Would receive no-cost testing and related services during annual health checks or at other intervals and may opt out. The Secretary must document acceptance and test rates and may collect deidentified data for scientific analysis.
  • Female firefighters: Would be offered mammograms with set frequency. Ages 40-49 would be offered mammograms at least twice per year and ages 50 and older at least annually, with a licensed radiologist comparing recent and prior images and reporting results.
  • Male firefighters and surveillance: Would be offered prostate-specific antigen testing at least annually for those 50 and older and at 40 for high-risk individuals, with testing allowed as clinically indicated. The Secretary may share deidentified test data with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to track firefighter cancer trends.

No-cost cancer screening for military firefighters

This bill would require the Secretary of Defense to provide, at no cost, cancer testing and related services to Department of Defense firefighters. Female firefighters ages 40–49 would be offered mammograms at least twice a year. Female firefighters age 50 and older would be offered mammograms at least once a year. A licensed radiologist would compare recent and prior mammograms and give results to the firefighter. Firefighters age 40 and older would get counseling about stool-based colon tests. Firefighters age 45 and older would be offered regular colon exams (for example, colonoscopy) or stool testing, with a physician review and results given. Male firefighters age 50 and older would be offered an annual PSA blood test, and high-risk men age 40 and older would be offered annual PSA testing. Firefighters could opt out. The Secretary would document acceptance and testing rates, remove personally identifiable information before analysis, and may share de-identified data with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
