Sponsored By: Senator Risch, James E. [R-ID]

In Committee

Summary

Raises the burial and funeral benefit for deaths from service-connected disabilities and ties future increases to inflation. The bill would increase the base payment from $2,000 to $3,000 and require the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to adjust that amount each fiscal year by the annual percentage change in the all-items Consumer Price Index for the United States city average, with each increase rounded to the nearest dollar.

Higher burial payments for veterans

If enacted, the bill would raise the one-time burial and funeral payment the VA can pay for deaths from a service-connected disability from $2,000 to $3,000. The $3,000 would be the new base amount before yearly inflation adjustments. The bill would also require the VA to increase that amount each fiscal year by the percent change in the Consumer Price Index (All Items, U.S. city average). The CPI comparison uses the 12 months ending June 30 before the fiscal year versus the prior 12 months, and each annual increase would be rounded to the nearest dollar.
