Published Date: 2/20/2025

Proposed Rule

Summary

The EPA is planning to cancel most of the allowed residue limits for the pesticide chlorpyrifos, except for a few crops like apples, cotton, and strawberries. This change affects farmers, food producers, and anyone concerned about pesticide safety. The EPA is reopening the comment period, giving people more time to share their thoughts before the final decision, which could impact farming costs and food safety rules.

Most Chlorpyrifos Residue Limits Revoked

If you are a farmer, food producer, or someone worried about pesticide safety, the EPA proposed on December 10, 2024 to cancel most allowed residue limits (tolerances) for the pesticide chlorpyrifos. Tolerances would remain only for alfalfa, apple, asparagus, tart cherry, citrus, cotton, peach, soybean, strawberry, sugar beet, and spring and winter wheat. The agency says this change could affect farming costs and food safety rules.
