Sacramento Metro Clears 2008 Ozone Hurdle, Dodges Penalties

Published Date: 3/21/2025

Proposed Rule

Summary

The EPA says the Sacramento Metro area met the 2008 ozone pollution rules by the end of 2024, based on recent air quality data. This means California won’t have to add extra pollution controls or face penalties for this ozone standard. People living and working in Sacramento can breathe a little easier, and the state can focus on keeping the air clean without extra costs or deadlines right now.

Sacramento Metro Met 2008 Ozone Standard

If you live or work in the Sacramento Metro area, the EPA is proposing that the area met the 2008 8-hour ozone air quality standard by the attainment date of December 31, 2024. This finding is based on quality-assured monitoring data from 2022 through 2024. If finalized, the State will not have to keep contingency measures for reasonable further progress and attainment for the 2008 ozone standard for this area.

Stay and Deferral of Clean Air Act Sanctions

The EPA is making an interim final determination that stays and defers the imposition of Clean Air Act sanctions tied to a disapproval action about the contingency measures requirement for the Sacramento Metro area. That stay and deferral applies while the EPA processes this proposed attainment determination.
