Pacific Cod Quota Shifts to Small Boats in Alaska Waters

Published Date: 3/26/2025

Rule

Summary

The government is shifting some unused Pacific cod fishing quota from jig gear boats to smaller catcher vessels using hook-and-line or pot gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands. This change helps make sure the 2025 fishing season’s Pacific cod limits get fully used. Fishermen with boats under 60 feet will benefit from this reallocation starting in the 2025 A season.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Small catcher boats gain Pacific cod quota

If you operate a catcher vessel under 60 feet (18.3 m) using hook-and-line or pot gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, NMFS is reallocating projected unused Pacific cod quota to those vessels to allow the 2025 A season apportionment to be harvested. This change applies to the 2025 A season apportionment of Pacific cod TAC in the BSAI.

Jig-gear vessels lose projected quota share

NMFS is reallocating the projected unused amount of Pacific cod TAC away from vessels using jig gear in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands so that it can be taken by catcher vessels under 60 feet using hook-and-line or pot gear. This affects the A season apportionment of the 2025 Pacific cod TAC.
