FAA Orders Software and Hardware Fixes for CFM Jet Engines

Published Date: 8/6/2025

Proposed Rule

Summary

The FAA is updating rules for certain CFM LEAP engines to keep them safe and running smoothly. If you own these engines, you’ll need to update the engine software, swap out some wiring harnesses, and install a new heated pressure part to stop freezing problems. These changes help prevent engine issues and keep flights safe, with deadlines and costs to plan for.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

Heated Pressure Subsystem Install Required

The FAA would require replacing the pressure subsystem (PSS) on affected CFM LEAP engines with a newly designed heated PSS that includes a heater element to evaporate moisture and prevent freezing at low temperature. This change is intended to prevent engine issues and help keep flights safe, while also imposing a mandatory parts replacement on engine owners/operators.

Required FADEC and PHM Software Updates

If you own CFM LEAP engines listed in this rule, you must replace certain FADEC and PHM software with new versions that are eligible for installation. This proposed AD would supersede AD 2018-19-16 and specifically affects the listed LEAP-1A engine model series that have certain FADEC and PHM software installed.

Mandatory Wiring Harness Replacements

The proposed AD requires replacing certain wiring harnesses on the affected CFM LEAP engine models with newly designed harnesses. If you operate or maintain these engines, you will need to install the redesigned harnesses as part of compliance with the AD.
