Alaska Cod Quotas Shift Between Vessel Groups

Published Date: 8/27/2025

Rule

Summary

The government is shifting some unused Pacific cod fishing rights from one group of boats (AFA catcher/processors) to another group (Amendment 80 vessels) in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands. This change helps make sure the full 2025 Pacific cod catch limit gets used. Fishermen in these areas will see this update starting in 2025, helping them catch more fish and keep the industry buzzing.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Amendment 80 vessels gain Pacific cod

If you operate an Amendment 80 fishing vessel in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands (BSAI), the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is reallocating the projected unused amount of Pacific cod from American Fisheries Act (AFA) catcher/processor vessels to Amendment 80 vessels for 2025. The change is intended to help ensure the full 2025 total allowable catch (TAC) of Pacific cod can be harvested.

AFA catcher/processors lose projected unused quota

If you operate an AFA catcher/processor vessel in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, NMFS is reallocating the projected unused amount of Pacific cod away from AFA catcher/processors to Amendment 80 vessels for the 2025 season. The reallocation moves the projected unused Pacific cod share from AFA catcher/processors so that the 2025 TAC can be fully harvested.
