Summary

The EPA just gave a thumbs-up to Michigan’s updated plan to clear up the skies and reduce haze in special natural areas. This plan, crafted by Michigan’s environmental team, sets new steps to keep the air cleaner and the views clearer over the next few years. People living near these protected spots will see better air quality, and the plan follows all the rules without extra costs or delays.

Michigan Regional Haze Plan Approved

The EPA approved Michigan’s Regional Haze State Implementation Plan (SIP) revision that Michigan submitted on August 23, 2021 and supplemented on July 24, 2025, finding it meets requirements under the Clean Air Act (sections 110 and 169A) and EPA’s Regional Haze Rule for the program’s second implementation period. The plan requires periodic long-term strategies to make reasonable progress toward preventing and remedying human-caused visibility impairment in mandatory Class I Federal areas. If you live in Michigan near a Class I Federal area, this approval means the state plan is in place to address haze and protect visibility there.
