LCD Patent Wars: ITC Probes Screen Import Shenanigans

Published Date: 11/28/2025

Notice

Summary

The U.S. International Trade Commission is launching an investigation into certain liquid crystal display (LCD) devices and their parts because some companies say these products break their patents. This affects businesses importing or selling these LCD products in the U.S., and could lead to import bans or sales stops soon. Keep an eye out—this could shake up the LCD market and impact money flow starting late 2025 or early 2026.

ITC Opens Patent-Infringement Probe of LCDs

The U.S. International Trade Commission instituted an investigation on November 24, 2025 into the importation and sale in the United States of certain liquid crystal display (LCD) devices and components for alleged infringement of U.S. Patent No. 7,705,948 and U.S. Patent No. 7,570,334. The complaint was filed August 29, 2025, amended September 19, 2025, and supplemented September 25, 2025; the investigation covers "LCD devices composed of two glass substrates sandwiching a layer of liquid crystal pixels and the associated circuitry."

Respondents Must File Responses Within 20 Days

Entities named as respondents (including listed firms such as HKC, HiSense, VIZIO, TCL, LG Electronics, and Westinghouse) must submit responses under 19 CFR 210.13; responses will be considered if received not later than 20 days after service of the complaint and notice of investigation. Failure to file timely responses may be deemed a waiver and can result in entry of initial and final determinations and issuance of exclusion or cease and desist orders.

Complainants Seek Import Bans and Sales Orders

The complainants have requested that the Commission, after its investigation, issue a limited exclusion order and cease and desist orders to stop importation and U.S. sales of the accused LCD products. If issued, those remedies would block or restrict entry and distribution of the described LCD devices and components.
