Government: 'Oops, We Still Have Fish Left to Catch'

Published Date: 12/12/2025

Rule

Summary

Great news for folks who love fishing on charter boats in the Gulf of America! The red snapper season for recreational for-hire fishing is reopening from December 11, 2025, to January 1, 2026, because there’s still some catch left under the yearly limit. This means more chances to catch red snapper while keeping the fish population safe and sound.

When the for-hire component closes at 12:01 a.m. local time on January 1, 2026, the bag and possession limits for red snapper on Federal for-hire vessels will be zero. Also, anyone aboard a vessel that was issued a Federal charter vessel/headboat permit for Gulf reef fish at any time during the fishing year may not harvest or possess red snapper in or from the Gulf EEZ when the for-hire component is closed, regardless of where the fish were harvested.
