FCC seeks to cut rural paperwork burden

The FCC is asking for public comments on reducing paperwork for businesses, not-for-profits, and state/local/tribal governments involved in rural internet funding. Comments are due March 31, 2026; the agency estimates 530 respondents, 530 responses, about 2 hours per response, and a total annual burden of 1,060 hours. The notice specifically asks for ways to further reduce the burden on small businesses with fewer than 25 employees.

FCC drops long-form application (Form 683)

The Commission eliminated the information collection requirements tied to the CAF Phase II long-form application (FCC Form 683) now that its review of long-forms has concluded, but it retained limited ongoing requirements for annual maintenance of letters of credit under 47 CFR 54.315(c) (CAF Phase II) and 47 CFR 54.804(c) (RDOF). These rules apply to entities that participated in the CAF Phase II auction (support up to $1.98 billion over 10 years) and the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) auction (up to $20.4 billion over the next decade).
