Safer Snoozes: New Rules for Crib Mattresses Protect Babies

Published Date: 2/12/2026

Rule

Summary

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is updating the safety rules for crib mattresses to follow the newest 2025 voluntary standards, making sure baby beds stay super safe. This change affects crib mattress makers and sellers, who must follow the new rules starting May 3, 2026. No big costs are expected, but everyone should get ready for the updated safety checks!

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Parents get safer crib mattresses

You (parents and caregivers) will get crib mattresses that meet ASTM F2933-25 safety improvements, including a mattress firmness test, a coil‑spring laceration test, clearer warnings and instructions, and explicit coverage for some after‑market bassinet/play yard mattresses. The Commission says these revisions improve safety and they take effect May 3, 2026.

Manufacturers must follow the 2025 standard

If you make or sell crib mattresses, your products must comply with ASTM F2933-25 as incorporated into 16 CFR part 1241, with certain retained modifications, starting May 3, 2026. The rule applies to products manufactured after the effective date.

Third‑party testing and lab updates required

Crib mattresses are children’s products subject to CPSC third‑party testing and certification under section 14 of the Consumer Product Safety Act, and testing must follow ASTM F2933-25 beginning May 3, 2026. The revised standard adds a firmness fixture specification (a rigid bar) that could require test laboratories to modify or remake fixtures, and labs are expected to update accreditation scopes in the normal course.

Federal rule preempts different state rules

Once the federal crib mattress standard takes effect, states may not establish or continue requirements addressing the same risk of injury unless the state rule is identical to the federal standard. This preemption applies when the consumer product safety standard is in effect.
