Regional Jets: Beefed-Up Rudder and Elevator Tests

Published Date: 3/6/2026

Rule

Summary

If you fly or maintain MHI RJ Aviation ULC regional jets (formerly Bombardier), listen up! The FAA is updating safety checks to catch power control unit problems earlier by requiring more frequent tests on rudder and elevator controls. These new rules kick in March 23, 2026, so operators should get ready to keep these jets flying safe without breaking the bank.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

More frequent PCU checks required

If you operate or maintain the listed MHI RJ (formerly Bombardier) regional jets, you must perform repetitive operational checks of the rudder PCUs and operational tests of the elevator PCUs at intervals not to exceed 200 flight hours or 3 months, whichever occurs first. These new test intervals are required starting March 23, 2026 to detect potential single PCU disconnects earlier and address the unsafe condition that could cause loss of control surface function.

Estimated compliance cost per airplane

The FAA estimates the labor cost to accomplish the retained and new required actions is up to 8 work-hours at $85 per hour, resulting in an estimated cost per airplane of up to $680 for each set of required actions. The FAA estimates this AD affects 711 U.S.-registered airplanes and estimates the cost on U.S. operators for each set of required actions is up to $483,480.

Which jet models are covered

This AD applies to all MHI RJ Aviation ULC airplanes of the following models: CL-600-2B19 (Regional Jet Series 100 & 440), CL-600-2C10 (Series 700, 701 & 702), CL-600-2C11 (Series 550), CL-600-2D15 (Series 705), CL-600-2D24 (Series 900), and CL-600-2E25 (Series 1000).
