USDA Keeps Raw Meat Labels Boring and Unchanged Indefinitely

Published Date: 3/12/2026

Notice

Summary

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service wants to keep collecting nutrition label info on major cuts of raw meat and poultry, plus ground or chopped versions. No changes are planned, but they need to renew approval before July 31, 2026. Meat producers and packagers should note this keeps the labeling rules steady with no new costs or surprises.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Renewed Meat Labeling Info Collection

If you are a meat producer, packager, grocery store, or warehouse, FSIS will request renewal of the information collection that requires nutrition labeling of major cuts and ground or chopped meat and poultry. The agency says there are no changes to the collection, the OMB approval expires on July 31, 2026, and FSIS estimates 76,439 respondents with 1.77 annual responses per respondent for a total annual burden of 67,861 hours.

Nutrition Labels Required on Meat

You will see nutrition labeling for major cuts of single-ingredient raw meat and poultry (examples include Beef Chuck Blade Roast, Beef Brisket, Chicken Breast, Turkey Thigh) and on all ground or chopped meat and poultry products, unless an exemption applies. FSIS allows the nutrition label to be on the package or at the point of purchase and says the ground/chopped product rules are consistent with other nutrition labeling rules (see 9 CFR citations).
