Cremation Beads Will Be Repatriated

Stanford University intends to return a string of stone 'cremation beads' (acquired January 1946) that are culturally affiliated with the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians. The repatriation may occur on or after April 15, 2026.

Who May Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization (not already named) may submit a written request for repatriation and must show affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence. If competing requests are received, Stanford University must determine the most appropriate requestor; joint requests count as a single request.

No Known Hazardous Treatment

Stanford University states it has no knowledge that any potentially hazardous substances were used to treat the cultural item(s) described in this notice. This indicates recipients need not expect known contamination-related handling or remediation from Stanford for these items.
