The items are connected to the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians; Mi'kmaq Nation; Passamaquoddy Tribe; and the Penobscot Nation, and include materials from sites dated about 3,800 years before present.

Anyone with Lineal Ties Can Request Items

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request to receive the items by showing a cultural affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence. Repatriation may occur on or after April 27, 2026, and the University must resolve competing requests and considers joint requests as a single request.
