Winnowing Basket Returning to Tribe

The Museum of Ventura County intends to return one winnowing basket (a cultural patrimony item attributed to maker Susie Wilson of Death Valley) to the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe. The basket was acquired in the 1960s and donated to the museum in 1996, and the repatriation may occur on or after May 4, 2026.

Who May Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not identified in the notice may submit a written request for repatriation by showing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated organization. Requests must be sent to Deya Terrafranca at the Museum of Ventura County (100 E Main Street, Ventura, CA 93001 or the museum email) and repatriation may occur on or after May 4, 2026; competing requests must be resolved by the museum.
