Three Affiliated Tribes Can Request Repatriation

If you are a member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation, the South Dakota State Historical Society has identified six Native American individuals and 1,352 associated funerary objects as culturally affiliated with your tribe. Your tribe may send a written request to have these remains and objects repatriated on or after May 4, 2026.

Other Descendants or Tribes May Request Return

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not named can also submit a written request to repatriate these remains and objects if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are culturally affiliated. Such requests for repatriation may be submitted and acted on on or after May 4, 2026.
