Bill Overview
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.
Five years of ALS research funding
The law authorizes $100 million each year for 2022 through 2026. This money funds the Act’s research grants, partnerships, and planning. It does not change taxes or your household bills directly.
Grants for ALS patients outside trials
HHS gives grants to clinical trial sites sponsored by small businesses. The grants support ALS patients who cannot join trials and use data from expanded access. Sites must have an FDA‑allowed expanded access request. Money can pay for the drug, giving the drug, and research costs. Programs must not block enrollment in ongoing trials and must promote fair access for underserved groups. Grants are available until September 30, 2026.
FDA plan and partnerships speed ALS research
FDA awards grants and contracts for ALS and other rare neurodegenerative diseases. Funds support tools, master protocols, adaptive trials, and trial networks. Within one year, HHS sets up a public-private partnership with NIH, FDA, and eligible nonprofits or universities. The partnership can accept gifts and use them without more appropriation for some research tied to expanded access. Within six months, FDA publishes a five-year action plan and names staff to carry it out. The plan improves coordination with patients, sponsors, and researchers.
