Less college coursework for Alaska accountants
Beginning January 1, 2026, Alaska removes the 150-semester-hour education requirement for certified public accountant licenses. Applicants still need a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a school the board accepts. Their accounting studies must meet standards the board approves. They also need two years of accounting experience satisfactory to the board. The Uniform CPA Examination requirement remains.
More licensing routes for professional conservators
Professional conservator applicants can use an Alaska CPA license instead of nationally recognized guardian certification. They must be at least 21, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and have six months of financial-management work experience or an accounting-related associate degree. They must also meet application rules and pass criminal-history checks with no disqualifying conviction in the prior 10 years. The department must issue temporary licenses to otherwise qualified applicants likely to earn either required credential within one year. Proof of that credential within one year after temporary licensing earns a full license without a new application.
One accounting permit route ends
Beginning January 1, 2026, Alaska ends the accounting permit route previously authorized by AS 08.04.240(k). Initial-permit and renewal rules no longer refer to permits issued through that route. This affects applicants and permit holders who relied on it.
Conservators face training deadlines and removal
Relatives or friends serving as conservators must complete one hour of education on conservatorship basics. The requirement also covers CPA-pathway professional conservators who have not already completed the education. They must finish before appointment or within 30 days afterward. When appointment depends on an agreement to finish within 30 days, missing the deadline requires removal and a successor.
Professional conservators must keep qualifying credentials
Professional conservators must keep the guardian certification or CPA license required for their conservator license. Losing that credential can lead to discipline, license denial, or refusal to renew. This keeps the licensing standard in place for professionals serving protected people.
Out-of-state accountants gain access with oversight
Beginning January 1, 2026, accountants without Alaska licenses can practice using another state's license and a main business location there. Alaska removes the prior education, exam, and experience equivalency test for this route. Firms qualify with a main business location in another state, no Alaska office, and more than half their owners being CPAs in good standing. Eligible accountants and firms need not notify the Alaska board, pay a board fee, or submit documents to practice. Firms must follow Alaska rules, accept board oversight and legal papers through their licensing board, and stop practicing if home-state authorization becomes invalid; Alaska's board can set qualifications and discipline firm privileges.
