Higher legal-aid funding cap for low-income Alaskans

The Civil Legal Services Fund is a special account within Alaska's general fund. The law raises one annual funding cap from 10% to 25% of court filing fees from the previous completed fiscal year. Lawmakers can fund the account only through that general-fund allowance and state deposits covered by AS 09.17.020(j). Lawmakers can use the fund to support groups providing civil legal help to low-income people. Those served must have income at or below 125% of the latest federal poverty guidelines for Alaska. The law does not create a dedicated fund, set a dollar amount, or require more funding.
