Alaska adopts three evacuation warning levels

The law requires covered Alaska evacuation maps and public messages to use three warning levels. Level 1 Ready, in green, means an emergency may exist in the area. Level 2 Set, in yellow, means evacuation is imminent. Level 3 Go, in red, means a dangerous hazard exists and people should leave immediately. Local disaster plans must use these levels if they include an evacuation plan. Hazardous-substance emergency plans must also use the levels and include precautionary evacuations and alternate traffic routes. These plans must identify covered facilities, hazardous-substance transport routes, and nearby facilities at increased risk, including hospitals or natural gas facilities. They must name emergency coordinators and describe response steps, timely public alerts, and ways to identify releases and affected areas. Plans must also list emergency equipment, facilities, responsible people, and schedules for responder training and practice exercises.
