Alaska may issue electronic identification cards, driver's licenses, and permits to applicants who already hold the matching valid physical credential. You keep the physical card, and regulations may require drivers to show it in some cases. The department sets rules for issuing and using electronic credentials. Electronic licenses must show a notice across the front when the physical license is seized, revoked, canceled, limited, restricted, or suspended. The law takes effect immediately but sets no electronic credential fee or issuance deadline.
Showing an electronic ID, driver's license, or permit does not give consent to search your device's other contents. This protection applies to peace officers and other authorized officials checking the credential. They must promptly return your device after checking your identity and, for a license or permit, its status.
Officers and authorized officials are generally not liable for device damage when you show an electronic ID, license, or permit. You can still seek civil damages when their intentional misconduct caused the damage.
Alaska may make license-data sharing agreements with law enforcement, government programs, and national driver and license-check systems. REAL ID disclosures must stay limited to what federal requirements need. Private entities may only confirm credential information you voluntarily provided; they cannot keep, disclose, sell, or reuse the state's data. At your or your designee's request, Social Security Administration-approved nonprofit, government, or tribal groups may receive records under similar verification-only safeguards. Requested sharing also covers Transportation Security Administration registered traveler entities, which may use data for lawful purposes while facilitating verification of credentials you voluntarily provided.
