Bill Overview
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.
Drivers can retake only failed sections
When an applicant fails or leaves part of a required driving test unfinished, Alaska can require retaking only that part. The department has this option; applicants are not guaranteed a partial retake.
Easier registration for older imported vehicles
Alaska cannot require legally imported vehicles at least 25 years old to meet current federal safety standards for registration. For vehicles registered under this rule, Alaska cannot deny, suspend, or revoke a title for failing those standards. These registration and title protections take effect immediately.
Insurance proof deadlines and notices for drivers
Drivers suspended for unpaid judgments must keep proof of financial responsibility, such as required insurance coverage. After the judgment is put on hold or paid, proof is required for one year for a first suspension. The period is three years for a second suspension and 10 years for a third. After a fourth or later suspension, proof is required while the person holds a license or nonresident driving privilege. These rules cover suspensions before, on, or after the amendment’s effective date. Insurers doing business in Alaska must notify affected Alaska customers within six months after that date.
