Alaska expands defense and Arctic oversight

Alaska’s Joint Armed Services Committee tracks military base closures and realignments, reviews local effects, and attends hearings to provide testimony. It works with government and community groups on defense issues and recommends state responses to Arctic security initiatives. It advocates for missile defense deployment and stationing military forces in Alaska, and explores more joint military training. It also holds hearings and consults with stakeholders on emerging defense issues. These duties do not require military deployments or provide funding.

Alaska expands planning for military communities

Beginning June 30, 2036, Alaska’s Military and Veterans’ Affairs Commission provides advice on military growth, supporting infrastructure, and defense businesses. It recommends better job opportunities for families of current and former military members. It helps communities strengthen military ties through education, training, cultural and recreation resources, and housing and energy affordability. It maintains a strategic plan to protect existing missions, attract new missions, and support defense industries, including consideration of base closures. Each year, it reports electronically by January 31 to the Joint Armed Services Committee and other legislative military committees that exist. It also seeks views from each member of Alaska’s congressional delegation. These duties do not guarantee funding, projects, jobs, or lower household bills.
