Beginning June 1, 2025, Alabama removes the Veterans Day closure requirement for county and city offices and banks. They may open on November 11, but the law does not require them to open. Public K–12 schools still must close. State offices remain covered by the general state-holiday closure rule and its exceptions.
Beginning June 1, 2025, Alabama recognizes Juneteenth on June 19 as a state holiday. State offices close on state holidays, including Mardi Gras in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Sunday holidays move to Monday; Saturday holidays move to Friday. Offices may stay open with 60 days’ written notice to the State Personnel Board or for emergencies. The board may give blanket approval for essential services to open regularly. Employees working holidays must receive paid compensation or time off. Time off should be scheduled within that quarter, but may carry forward for up to one year. Failure to schedule it requires written justification; unused days must be paid at no less than the employee’s usual rate. The January holiday is listed as Robert E. Lee’s birthday alone, on the third Monday, rather than also honoring Martin Luther King Jr. The February holiday remains on the third Monday but no longer names George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. December 1 is Rosa L. Parks Day, which citizens are encouraged to observe; counties and cities may also observe it.
Beginning June 1, 2025, Alabama’s public schools and colleges must close on Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. This includes public K–12 schools and public two-year and four-year colleges. The rule creates a shared holiday break but makes school and college services unavailable that day.
Beginning June 1, 2025, Alabama’s bank superintendent may authorize state banks to close on state or federal holidays. At least two State Banking Board members must agree. The superintendent may also allow closures for special events the governor declares state holidays; authorized closures are optional. When a holiday falls on Friday, the next Saturday may also count as a holiday. Banks may close at noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when those dates are business days.
