Beginning June 1, 2025, the Calhoun County coroner can employ up to two paid assistant coroners. Each receives $6,100 yearly, paid every two weeks from the county general fund. The county commission can also fund office supplies, equipment, training, and related operating costs. Funeral establishments can reimburse the office for reasonable, necessary body removal and transport costs, plus copies of reports and documents. The coroner must send reimbursements to the county by the tenth of each month for deposit in a separate account. That account funds office operations, supplies, equipment, and staff training, including training travel.
The law replaces the prior coroner pay law, keeping pay and allowances in effect May 31, 2025, subject to these changes. Beginning June 1, 2025, the Calhoun County coroner receives a $20,000 yearly expense allowance. Beginning January 18, 2027, the base salary is $54,750, and all other coroner pay and allowances under this section end. The law provides uniform raises beginning June 1, 2009, matching county employee raises in dollar amount or percentage. Longevity raises reflect continuous service and use the same years-of-service limit as county employees. The calculation base remains the June 1, 2009, compensation unless a general or local law increases it. A successor starts at the predecessor’s salary, including cost-of-living increases but excluding longevity increases, merit raises, and bonuses. Unless another law allows otherwise, incumbent raises are paid as expense allowances until the next term begins. Those allowances then become base salary and end as separate allowances. Pay and allowances come from the county general fund every two weeks.
