Beginning September 1, 2025, Alabama's state sales and use tax on qualifying food drops from 3% to 2%. That saves households $1 in state tax for every $100 in taxable food purchases. Counties and cities can also lower their local food taxes, but no local cut is required. Local governments must adopt a tax cut by ordinance or resolution at least 60 days before it starts. Local cuts take effect on October 1 following adoption.
