Through September 30, 2027, Fayette County’s revenue commissioner keeps the base annual salary in effect on September 30, 2025. From October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2027, the commissioner also receives a $15,000 yearly expense allowance. The county general fund pays the allowance in equal monthly installments. Beginning October 1, 2027, the annual base salary is $67,000, replacing the earlier salary and ending the allowance.
Effective June 1, 2025, Fayette County’s revenue commissioner handles property tax assessment, collection, records, and reports. Voters elect the commissioner for six years, with elections every six years afterward. The law does not abolish the separate Tax Assessor and Tax Collector offices or change tax rates or exemptions. Fees, commissions, and other allowed charges legally transferred to the commissioner go into the county general fund. County commission approval is required for staff appointments, duties, and pay; deputies’ acts have the same legal force as the commissioner’s. Before taking office, the commissioner must take the required oath and obtain a bond from an Alabama-authorized bonding company. The county commission sets the bond amount, and the probate judge approves it. The county general fund pays the bond cost as a priority claim against the county. The county must provide needed offices, equipment, stationery, and supplies, but the offices no longer must be in the courthouse.
