Beginning June 1, 2025, Marengo County’s coroner gets $1,000 monthly for expenses, up from $400, plus separate mileage payments. The county commission may authorize the coroner, by resolution, to hire a deputy who serves at the coroner’s pleasure. The commission sets the deputy’s monthly expense allowance; the law sets no amount. Also beginning June 1, 2025, the commission may set mileage allowances for both officials, replacing prior legal mileage allowances. This removes the coroner’s fixed rate of 22 cents per mile without setting a new rate. All payments come from the county general fund. Beginning October 1, 2026, and at each fiscal year’s start afterward, the commission may—but need not—raise expense and mileage allowances. Accepting these allowances means giving up corresponding expense or mileage allowances under general state law.
