Beginning October 1, 2025, officers using portable scales can detain only five vehicles at once, including the vehicle being weighed. Operators who believe a portable-scale violation is inaccurate can seek a certified platform-scale check. They can request officer accompaniment to the nearest state-certified scale run by a bonded operator within 10 highway miles. Alternatively, they can use the nearest certified, bonded platform scale within 100 highway miles without an officer. That option requires online submission of the weight ticket and court-provided affidavit within 48 hours of the original weighing. If the check confirms legal weight, including allowed tolerance, no violation, court costs, fees, or penalties apply.
Beginning October 1, 2025, trucks delivering asphalt plant mix and concrete-mixing trucks get an exemption from axle-weight rules. The exemption applies within 50 miles of their home base, while they stay within the maximum gross weight. These trucks remain barred from bridges posted for lower weight limits.
Beginning October 1, 2025, authorized officers can weigh trucks and trailers suspected of exceeding legal or permit limits. Officers can use portable or stationary scales and require excess loads to be unloaded. Operators can instead choose to move the vehicle and load to the nearest incorporated town or court with unloading authority. Refusing measurement, weighing, or required unloading violates the law.
