Beginning October 1, 2025, Army battalion commanders join other authorized commanders in punishing enlisted Alabama National Guard members without court-martial. This punishment covers minor offenses and applies only while members are in military status. Authorized commanders can reduce members at E-4 or below to the lowest or an intermediate pay grade. Specified senior authorities can reduce members at E-6 or below by up to two pay grades. For these punishment rules, a day means one active-duty military payday for pay calculations and one calendar day otherwise.
Beginning October 1, 2025, special courts-martial can reduce Alabama National Guard enlisted members in grades E-9 and below to E-1. Previously, members at E-7 through E-9 could be reduced only to E-4. Officers can be reduced to the highest rank they last held honorably before the offense. These courts cannot order dishonorable discharge, dismissal, confinement longer than six months, or forfeiture of more than 24 days’ pay.
