Beginning July 1, 2025, the Legislative Council can contract to demolish the State House at 11 South Union Street, Montgomery. Demolition must wait until the new State House is completed and named as its replacement. The Council can choose financially responsible reuse, recycling, upcycling, sale, or disposal of building property and attached materials. Removal is allowed despite conflicting laws, whether or not items appear on state inventory lists. The Council, Legislative Services Agency, House Clerk, and Senate Secretary must list items for removal from the inventory. The State Auditor must remove those items upon receiving the list. Items with very little value can commemorate the building’s history and honor the Legislature.
Beginning July 1, 2025, lawmakers and legislative employees can buy items from the old legislative chambers when offered for sale. Only desks, chairs, and other chamber items not moving to the new State House qualify. The House Clerk and Senate Secretary must set prices and can decide how to conduct sales. The law does not set prices or guarantee sales.
