Beginning June 1, 2025, Alabama expands annual stipend eligibility to include career and technical education building administrators and alternative school administrators. Similar roles need Alabama State Department of Education approval. Administrators must hold the required certification, work full-time for a local school board, and be housed full-time at a standalone facility. Principals must manage daily operations and supervise teachers; assistant principals must help with those duties. The law does not set stipend amounts.
Beginning June 1, 2025, Alabama narrows school designations used for principal and assistant principal stipend eligibility. High-poverty status requires at least 75% direct certification for free or reduced-price federal lunch, using the latest posted data. Providing meals to all students through community eligibility no longer qualifies a school on its own. Low-performing status requires Comprehensive Support and Improvement status, a D or F state report card grade, or full support under Alabama’s Literacy or Numeracy Act. Targeted Support and Improvement, Additional Targeted Support and Improvement, and limited support status no longer qualify on their own. These changes can remove stipend eligibility for affected administrators; the law does not set stipend amounts.
