Effective June 1, 2025, the law lets the Shelby County Commission set an extra vehicle registration fee. The county can impose only one continuing annual fee, capped at $2, covering new registrations, transfers, and renewals. The fee applies only after county approval, starting with the registration year beginning January 1 after approval. The county license issuing official collects it on top of existing fees, taxes, and charges. Proceeds go monthly to the Sheriff's Law Enforcement Fund for law enforcement within Shelby County. This money cannot replace or reduce other income for the sheriff or sheriff's office.
