More legal protection for trained community responders

Since October 1, 2025, Alabama law protects trained community emergency response team members and affiliates from civil damages. They must have completed training recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). They must give first aid or emergency care for free and in good faith at an accident, casualty, or disaster scene. Protection also covers providing or arranging further medical care. It does not cover gross negligence.

More legal protection for unpaid emergency professionals

Since October 1, 2025, Alabama law protects certain unpaid professionals and people they directly supervise from civil damages during emergency response. Covered professionals include licensed engineers, architects, surveyors, contractors, and subcontractors. They must work under or with a community emergency response team, a county or state emergency management agency, or FEMA. Any community team involved must have completed FEMA-recognized training. They must act as a reasonably careful person would in similar circumstances. Protected work must occur within 90 days after an emergency is declared.
