Higher fees in Alabama criminal cases

Beginning June 1, 2025, a covered Alabama criminal-case fee rises from $12 to $15, adding $3 per assessment. It applies in municipal, district, and circuit courts, including bond forfeitures and issuance of alias or capias warrants. Parking-ticket violations and small-claims cases are excluded from additional fees. Beginning in fiscal year 2026, each fee sends $14 to the Alabama DNA Database Fund and $1 to the Citizenship Trust.

Fingerprint and DNA rules for detained noncitizens

Beginning June 1, 2025, Alabama law enforcement cannot release noncitizens unlawfully present in the United States before collecting fingerprints and DNA. Agencies must collect a full set of fingerprints; no new DNA sample is required if one was previously collected. Fingerprints go to the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency for cataloging. DNA samples go to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for testing and entry into the appropriate database.
