Beginning October 1, 2025, Alabama mothers nursing when they receive a jury summons can ask the court to excuse them. They must provide a written statement confirming they are nursing. They must also provide the child's birth certificate, another government document, or a medical record certifying the birth. Once excused, they are exempt for 24 months; after that, the court can direct them to return for jury service. This exemption preserves their separate right to one automatic postponement.
