Reentry task force members get expense support

Legislative task force members receive pay, daily allowances, and travel expenses for meeting days under Alabama's constitutional rules. Other members serve without pay but may receive reimbursement for necessary meeting expenses under their appointing authorities' policies. Legislative funds cover task force expenses incurred before or after enactment, with a $5,000 total cap.

Alabama creates task force for prison reentry

The law creates a 19-member Alabama Statewide Reentry Task Force, building on the Reentry Alabama Commission and Reentry 2030 Initiative. It must develop a plan to reduce repeat crimes, victimization, and prison-related costs while helping people return to community life. Its duties include advancing proven programs, removing needless barriers, and coordinating services to avoid duplication. It must develop strategies for education, support services, health coverage, and behavioral health care, and pursue employer partnerships for job placement. It advises lawmakers and the Governor and creates outside advisory or working groups. Members include lawmakers, agency and court leaders, and local government, nonprofit, and lived-experience representatives. Appointments must reflect Alabama's racial, gender, geographic, urban, rural, and economic diversity. The Director of Pardons and Paroles chairs the group, with legislative offices providing support. Its first meeting must occur within 30 days after enactment, followed by meetings at least quarterly. Progress reports are due each December 1. Its final findings and recommendations for legislation are due by the tenth legislative day of the 2030 Regular Session, when it dissolves. Meeting notices, member names, the final report, and all documents it produces must go to the Secretary of State.
