More earning options for college athletes

Athletes who play or qualify for college sports can earn money from their name, image, or likeness, even without enrolling. High school athletes are excluded. Schools cannot block these earnings, except through limits required by their athletic association. This pay does not affect scholarship eligibility. Schools and college athletic associations can also pay athletes, but payments are not required and no amount is set. The law removes the ban on athlete pay contracts that conflict with team contracts. It also removes related contract-disclosure rules and schools’ duty to identify conflicting terms.

Parents must represent athletes under 18

College athletes under 18 must have a parent or guardian represent them in negotiations. The athlete and parent or guardian can also use a lawyer or another capable representative. The law does not set a fee or require payment for representation.
