New Colorado committee addresses Tribal concerns

The law creates the American Indian Affairs Interim Committee to study issues affecting federally recognized Tribal Nations. It includes six Colorado lawmakers and two nonvoting representatives, one each from the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute Tribes. The committee must seek input from Tribal Nations, community members, and relevant state agencies. Between regular legislative sessions, it may hold up to six meetings, including field trips, and recommend up to five bills. Its first meeting each year must be scheduled for no later than July 31. The committee cannot meet, recommend bills, or seek presentations or comments during the 2025 interim; those bans expire July 1, 2026. Members serve without pay but receive necessary expense reimbursement and the same daily meeting allowance as other interim committees. Legislative staff must assist the committee. By January 15, 2031, it must report the preceding five years’ discussions, recommendations, and actions, organized by year. The committee ends June 30, 2031.
