Plumber license exemptions for backflow workers

Workers who inspect, test, or repair backflow prevention devices are exempt from Colorado plumber licensing requirements. Installation and removal still require a plumber license. The exception covers workers installing or replacing a device on a stand-alone fire suppression system.

New service records for backflow devices

Beginning July 1, 2025, licensed plumbers must tag backflow devices after installing, testing, inspecting, repairing, or reinstalling them. Tags must list the business name and contact details, service date, work done, and contractor registration or master plumber license number. Certified cross-connection control technicians, including plumbers with that credential, must also tag devices after testing or repairs. These workers must hold a valid ASSE or ABPA backflow prevention assembly tester certification; credentialed plumbers also need a valid plumber license. Their tags must list the same business and service details, their certification number, and applicable plumbing registration or license number. One tag can record multiple services. Owners gain service records, while covered workers take on new tagging duties.
