Longer driver’s licenses for military family members

Beginning January 1, 2027, the law extends Colorado driver’s licenses for qualifying dependents of U.S. Armed Forces members. The service member must be on active duty outside Colorado when the license expires. The extension ends after three years or 90 days after the service member returns to Colorado, whichever comes first. Spouses and children qualify. Others qualify when the service member provided more than half their support for at least 180 days immediately before expiration. A referendum petition filed within the allowed period makes the law subject to voter approval at the November 2026 general election. In that case, it starts January 1, 2027, or upon the governor’s declaration of the vote, whichever is later.
