First responders get free address privacy

Beginning January 1, 2026, eligible Colorado voters can request address privacy in county and statewide voter records. Covered groups include current or former peace officers, firefighters, volunteer firefighters, emergency medical service providers, and emergency communications specialists. Their spouses and civil union partners also qualify, without showing a risk of criminal harassment or bodily harm. Applicants can submit requests to their county clerk. The Secretary of State must add a first-responder privacy option to online voter registration, direct applicants to an online application, and send applications to county clerks. County clerks cannot charge fees for any covered address-privacy request, and the law removes the Secretary of State’s fee authority. Record keepers must block public inspection of protected addresses; the requests themselves are not public records. Access remains available to applicants, authorized people, and certain employer employees who show a legitimate purpose with proof the record keeper accepts. Other voter information remains subject to existing public-record rules, and the existing risk-based privacy option remains available.
