Colorado plans must cover gender-affirming care

Every health benefit plan issued or renewed in Colorado must cover gender-affirming care, regardless of your sex or gender. Plans cannot deny or limit medically necessary care prescribed under generally accepted professional standards. Your prescribing physical or behavioral health provider decides what is medically necessary to treat gender dysphoria. Covered care includes hormones, mental health care, hair removal, facial procedures, breast or chest procedures, and genital and other surgeries. The definition also covers related testing, preventive care, rehabilitation, supportive services, and supplies. Colorado’s insurance commissioner must adopt rules to carry out these requirements.

More privacy for testosterone prescriptions

Colorado exempts testosterone prescriptions from its prescription drug monitoring requirements, including tracking rules that otherwise cover controlled substances. The state must also block archived testosterone prescriptions from view in the monitoring program. These protections apply to testosterone prescriptions, not just those used for gender-affirming care.
