Colorado removes its same-sex marriage ban

The law removes Colorado’s man-and-woman marriage restriction and defines marriage as a legally recognized union of two individuals. A marriage is valid when licensed, solemnized, and registered under state law. It also removes this section’s earlier rules on out-of-state and common-law marriages. Civil union policy now emphasizes equal rights, religious freedom, and protection against discrimination in jobs, housing, and public places. The law affirms that courts can recognize similar civil unions from other jurisdictions. Civil unions remain separate from marriages.
